Operation Aftermath 2 is based on a video game series that is owned by Bethesda Softworks called Fallout 3.
It incorporates the core elements of that game as its main backdrop. The location of our story is fictional and exists outside the canon story of the Fallout series, and as such, some details have been modified to fit our needs.
Ultimately, this is fan fiction. All credit for original names, characters, factions, or proprietary elements goes to Bethesda Softworks and their incredible staff who have continued to mold the Fallout Series since Fallout 3 was created.
On the setting:
OP: Aftermath is set in an alternate reality in which nuclear power in the 50's became the cornerstone of our energy needs. By the late 21st century, our world had become a retro-futuristic metropolis of 50's era style mixed with modern nuclear energy.
In 2077, the United States was locked in battle with the Chinese military in the beginning of what would later be referred to as "The Great War."
The Great War was a conventional and nuclear engagement that only lasted a mere 2 hours. During that time every major population center in the world was reduced by powerful nuclear weapons, killing most of the world's population, and permanently crippling all infrastructures around the world.
Only a handful of underground vaults and fallout shelters were populated across the nation. Sealed in underground vaults, Americans survived the horror of nuclear holocaust, but when they finally emerged, what lay before them was a broken wasteland.
Radiation and an escaped military experiment, the Forced Evolutionary Virus, or FEV would shape and mold wildlife as well as human life for the next 200 years creating various--and deadly--mutations throughout the wastes.
Over the years survivors moved out away from major cities in favor of small communities, striking out a living in any way they could. Some making an honest go of it selling salvage and offering services while others turned to murder and thieving to stay alive.
Money was no longer valuable and instead currency was kept through the use of beverage bottle caps. Caps, as they are now referred to, has become the chief method of currency. Most people are poor, having few caps to their name, but some have amassed large businesses.
Our story takes place in Berger Settlement, a popular trading hub in this area of the wastes. The population of the area is about 200 including members of various factions.
Berger Settlement is led by its Mayor who collects taxes on the local property owners and provides limited services to travelers such as community housing. There's always work to be done around Berger Settlement, so if you're passing through and looking to make caps, find the mayor and ask what needs to be done.
The wasteland areas around Berger Settlement are filled with various dangers such as Super Mutants, a terrible result of the Forced Evolutionary Virus gone wrong.
Mutants are hard to kill and often run in packs. They feed on the flesh of regular people, regardless of age and often torture their prisoners before consumption.
There are also gangs of ruthless raiders who find it easier to just take what others have earned instead of earning it for themselves.
A war is being waged between the Enclave, a ruthless military organization that claims to be the remnants of the former US Government, here to restore order and peace and the reclusive Brotherhood of Steel, a technology-crazed cult of militants. Civilians are often caught in the crossfire.
There is also the problem of random chaos caused by travelers and the usual shenanigans of the local wastelanders.
